Risk Management in Process Plants:

Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Reinhard Preiss

Process safety describes measures for meeting the demands of worker’s protection, environmental protection and protection against economic loss. This concerns the avoidance of incidents which are not very likely to occur, but can cause eventually major damage.

The field of process safety has developed historically from an approach based on rules and regulations (i.e. safety by meeting the relevant codes, standards and regulations) to a risk-based strategy. Within this strategy a continuous improvement through lessons learned from incidents or nearmisses is given and lagging as well as leading performance indicators are used.

Risk information is used to determine the required level of effort and management involvement.
