Electrical Engineering:Modern Lightning Protection of Structural Works | |
Every year 150 000 lightnings strike over Austria causing damage in excess of EUR 25 Mio.
A day with heavy thunder storms in Austria produces up to 27.000 lightnings. Today technology helps against the force of nature. Buildings, park of machines and computer networks can be protected against lightning by facilities against lightning and overvoltage.
Lightning Protection Standards in Austria:
In the year 1949 one have started in Austria to develop basics for the requirements for lightning protection installations. The long time valid Austrian regulation OVE-E49/1988 "lightning protection installations" (Blitzschutzanlagen) has been suspended by the electric technical decree (Elektrotechnikverordnung) ETV 2002. As a replacement for this regulation the new national standard OVE/ONORM E 8049-1/2001 lightning protection of structural works part 1 general principles (Blitzschutz baulicher Anlagen Teil 1 allgemeine Grundsaetze) has been declared for binding. This OVE/ONORM standard has to be applied for the planning and construction of lightning protection installations up to a height of 60 m. The target is to protect structural works against lightning influence for persons, installations and equipment in or at these.
